Booking a Couples Massage Without the Awkward Part

Couples massage gets booked as a gift more often than any other service, usually by someone who has had a massage before for someone who has not. A little planning makes the difference between a sweet gesture and an hour both people actually love.
You do not have to book the same treatment
This is the single most useful thing to know. One person can have deep tissue while the other has a Swedish or a hot stone session. Same room, same hour, different pressure. Forcing a first timer into deep tissue because their partner likes it is how people decide they hate massage.
Talking, or not
Some couples chat the whole time. Some go quiet within four minutes and stay there. Both are completely normal, and there is no etiquette to follow. If you want music slightly louder to make conversation feel private, ask.
Practical details worth sorting first
- Arrive ten minutes early so intake forms do not eat into your hour
- Skip a heavy meal beforehand, and skip the pre massage drink entirely
- Say up front if either of you is pregnant, injured or nervous
- Book late afternoon if you want the evening to stay slow
“The best version of this hour is not romantic in a staged way. It is two people leaving in a better mood than they arrived.”
For the first timer
You undress to your comfort level and stay draped the entire time. Only the area being worked is uncovered. Nothing about it is exposing, and nobody is judging your body, your tension or the fact that you fell asleep and snored. That last one happens most sessions.
