The Desk Job Knot: Why Your Neck Never Fully Lets Go

Clients point to the same spot on the top of the shoulder and say the knot is back. It rarely left. Upper trap tension is usually the loudest symptom of a pattern that involves the chest, the neck and how you hold your head all day.

Why the same spot keeps flaring

Sitting at a screen pulls the head forward and the shoulders in. The chest muscles shorten, the upper back lengthens and weakens, and the traps end up holding the weight of your head at an angle they were not designed for. Massaging only the sore spot gives you two good days. Working the chest, the neck flexors and the shoulder blade mechanics gives you two good weeks.

What a session should include

  • Pec minor and anterior shoulder release, not just the sore upper trap
  • Levator scapulae and the attachment behind the shoulder blade
  • Suboccipitals at the base of the skull, where the headaches often start
  • Jaw and temple work if you clench, which most desk workers do

The between sessions part

Nothing here is exciting, and all of it works. Raise your screen so the top of it is at eye level. Get out of the chair every forty five minutes, even for ninety seconds. Open your chest in a doorway twice a day for thirty seconds each side. Sleep on your back or side, not on your stomach with your head cranked round.

Massage buys you room. What you do with your posture decides how long you keep it.

How often to come in

If the pain is current and sharp, weekly for three weeks changes the pattern faster than anything spread out. After that, most desk based clients settle into every three or four weeks and stay comfortable. If headaches are part of your picture, mention it at intake, because the sequence changes.
